Puberty - A natural phenomenon..

A few days ago, I heard about a news that some distant relative of mine hosting a party. I dont know this person. So I was intrigued as to why I was told about this person. Let me put down what news I was told right to set the context here. That person's daughter has attained her puberty and he was hosting a grand party for that. I was told that the parents had bought jewellery worth more than 45 lakhs and much more. I was stunned and angry at the same time.My concern is not about what they buy for their daughter.

Here is my take on this subject. A girl attaining her puberty is a natural phenomenon and I dont think it has to be celebrated in a grand manner. From what I understand, it was a tradition followed in the olden days to tell the world that the daughter was ready for the next level in her life, i.e. , she being ready for marriage and having kids no matter how young she was. As derogatory as it sounds, that was the reason behind the celebration. It was not the case for the boys. The worst part is that, in the name of tradition it is still being followed. Did people ever think how emotionally traumatic it can be for the girls to sit in front of everyone and get celebrated for attaining her puberty?

It is that time of a girl's age where she matures both physically and mentally. It ain't an achievement nor something that has to be shouted out in public. In today's world, a girl child attains puberty from an age of 10 and some are even lucky when that they even cross the age of 16. But is it something that has to be out in open? For instance, a girl who goes to school faces a lot of humiliation due to this so called celebration. The inherent nature of our society is to treat men and women differently. The school kids are not spared either. There is a gender bias everywhere and a difference is created amongst them at this tender age itself. So, boys and girls form their own gangs. They pass derogatory comments at such girls. I have faced it during my school days. So do many girls at that age.

I feel such acts are unnecessary and leads to a lot of stress in the minds of the kids. Will the parents ever listen or think before they do such things? Or is it even discussed/debated to not to hold such celebration? I have no idea. Only time can answer these questions. As for me, I will not indulge in such acts..

  1. Good One .. Many intellects have been harping on the same subject for long now. Following traditions blindly is stupidity. Parents cannot thrust such socially awkward whims on their children. In this era we have started talking about equality, such practices inwardly continue to treat women as a commodity. Sad but definitely true.

  2. Totally agree. Its indeed much a do about nothing. People never realize the sense of awkwardness that the girl feels when they do something of this sort. Its worse than being butchered in public. And regarding the 45 lakhs!!!! What a shameless bombastry of wealth???
